Decolonising Education in the Global South: Historical and comparative international perspectives reflects on the decolonisation of education in the Global South (Africa, Latin America and the developing countries in Asia) from a historical and comparative perspective. Countries in the Global South are often characterised as poor, less developed and offering little to the community of social science scholarship. The voices of the Global North dominated those of the Global South and education for Africans was approached from an ethnocentric and Eurocentric point of view. The Global South had a tendency of theorising about indigenous people from a "Western perspective, using Western ideas, culture, politics, and historical experiences".

At South African universities, the scholarly fields of History of Education and Comparative and International Education had a firm foothold until a quarter of a century ago, but fell victim to broader education reform movements that resulted in the marginalisation – and even disappearance – of these fields as constituent parts of education programmes.

Decolonising Education in the Global South: Historical and comparative international perspectives is part of the response to push forward the struggle for decolonisation while putting pressure on the Global North to disengage from imperialism and Eurocentrism. In the belief that a rebuilt History of Education and Comparative and International Education in South Africa should answer the call emanating from both the public and scholarly discourse, the editors have compiled this volume. This re-appraisal of the value of History of Education and Comparative and International Education is not limited to South Africa, and scholars and lecturers of History of Education and Comparative and International Education beyond South Africa may also find value in this book.
